Pioneers Sweep for 5 Straight Wins

3947

Clayton Brandt had a huge day as MNU won games vs. Ottawa and St. Gregory's on Saturday. In the morning game against Ottawa, the Pioneers scored in the first on a Carlos Vargas single, but the Braves hit a 2-run homer in the second to take the lead. In the bottom of the third, Trent Sullivan singled and stole second ahead of a Jordan Eckley walk. With 2 outs, Kelvin Perez worked a walk to load the bases, and Jordan Jones knocked them all home with a double over the center fielder's head to give MNU a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Nelson Santiago crushed a 2-run homer to center, and MNU held on to win 6-3. Santiago Romero earned his first victory of the season. Zach Stinnett got the save. And Clayton Brandt (2-4, SB), Trent Sullivan (1-3, 2 R, 2 SB, HBP), Jordan Jones (1-3, 2B, 3 RBI), and Nelson Santiago (1-2, R, HR, 2 RBI, BB) led the offense.

In the afternoon game against St. Gregory's, the Cavaliers jumped out to a big lead after scoring 1 in the first and rallying for 6 in the second. The 7-1 lead was quickly chopped when the Pioneers loaded the bases for Brandt, who drove one into the trees in left for a grand slam. MNU got a run closer on a sacrifice fly in the third, and Brandt tied the game in the fourth with an RBI single, and MNU added 2 more to take a 9-7 lead. The Pioneers scored 4 in the fifth and 3 more in the sixth - highlighted by a Brandt 2-run triple to give him 7 RBIs - to record at least 1 run in every offensive inning. MNU won 16-7. Blake Robberson settled the game after entering in the second inning to pick up a win, and Clayton Brandt (3-4, 4 R, 3B, GS, 7 RBI, BB, 2 SB), Trent Sullivan (1-2, 3 R, 2B, RBI, BB, SB, 2 HBP), Jordan Eckley (2-3, R, 2 RBI, BB, SB, HBP), and Kelvin Perez (1-2, 3 R, BB, HBP) had big games at the plate.

MNU is 9-5. The next game is a double header on Wednesday at Park (2-4) at 1:00.
