Offense Stays Hot in Park Sweep

The Pioneers picked up a non-conference double header sweep at Park on Wednesday. In the third inning of Game 1, Clayton Brandt knocked home Kelvin Perez, who had doubled, and Carlos Vargas knocked home 2 more with a double to give MNU a 3-0 lead. Vargas drove in 2 more in the fifth, and the Pioneers exploded in the seventh to put the game out of reach. With the bases loaded and 1 out, the Pioneers recorded 3 consecutive 1-run singles before Kelvin Perez unloaded the bases with a bomb grand slam to left. The 12-1 lead was plenty for Tyler Taute, who allowed just 1 run on 5 hits in his first appearance of the season for the complete-game victory. Clayton Brandt (4-5, 3 R, 2B, RBI, SB), Carlos Vargas (3-3, R, 2B, 4 RBI, BB), and Kelvin Perez (2-4, 2 R, 2B, GS, 4 RBI) had multi-hit games.

In Game 2, a Jordan Eckley RBI triple followed by a Carlos Vargas sacrifice fly put MNU up 2-0, but the Pirates answered with 2 in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. In the top of the third MNU put together another huge inning, putting up 6 runs on 5 hits to take an 8-2 lead. A single run in the fourth and 2 more in the sixth put the Pioneers up 11-2. Park scored twice in the seventh for an 11-4 final. Jesus Brito earned his first victory pitching into the sixth. And Jordan Eckley (3-3, 4 R, 3B, RBI, BB, SB), Carlos Vargas (2-3, R, 2B, 3 RBI, SF), and Brandon Marrero (2-4, 2B, RBI) had multi-hit games.

MNU is 11-5. The next game is a single 9-inning game on Thursday at the University of St. Mary (7-6) at 1:00.
