Pioneers Swept at Peru

The Pioneers are 7 game back in the Western Division after dropping 4 games to HAAC-leading Peru State over the weekend. This is the first 4-game sweep of MNU since 2009 (William Jewell).

In Game 1, MNU built a 4-0 lead with a 1-run first and a 3-run third. Peru State cut into the lead with 2 unearned runs in the fourth, and took the lead in the fifth with 3 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks. In the top of the seventh with the Pioneers trailing 5-4, Clayton Brandt led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Jordan Eckley groundout to tie the game. But Peru walked off the Pioneers in the bottom of the inning with a 2-out single to win 6-5. Brandt (3-3, 3 R, 2B, RBI, BB) had 3 hits in the loss.

In Game 2, the Pioneers managed just 2 hits as the Bobcats built a 4-0 lead after 3 innings. MNU scored in the fourth but got no closer as Peru won 6-1. Brandt (1-3, 3B) and Carlos Vargas (1-3, RBI) got MNU's 2 hits.

In Game 3, Peru jumped all over the Pioneers with 4 in the first and 2 in the second to take a big lead. MNU was held hitless until a Kelvin Perez homer with 2 outs in the sixth, but the Bobcats responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 10-1 lead. Brandt hit a 2-run homer in the seventh but MNU fell 10-3. Brandt (1-4, R, HR, 2 RBI), Perez (1-3, R, HR, RBI), and Trent Sullivan (1-2, R, BB, SB) got MNU's 3 hits.

In Game 4, MNU starter Jesus Brito held Peru scoreless into the fifth, and a bases-loaded walk to Trent Sullivan in the fourth was followed by an RBI single from Jordan Eckley in the fifth to give MNU a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Peru had a runner on second with 2 outs when a walk and a single made it 2-1. Another single tied the game, and a 3-run homer gave the Bobcats a 5-2 lead. Peru extended the lead in the sixth with 2 runs on 3 hits, but the Pioneers fought back in the seventh. Four singles scored a run and brought the tying run to the plate with 2 outs. But a groundout ended the threat and completed the sweep. Jordan Jones (2-3, HBP) and Carlos Vargas (2-4, R, RBI) had 2 hits apiece.

MNU is 16-14 (4-8 HAAC). The next game is a single 9-inning non conference contest at home vs. St. Mary on Monday at 1:00.
