Pioneers Crush Spires

MNU scored in every inning as they beat St. Mary 17-5 in a 7-inning mercy rule game on Monday. A 5-game losing streak was snapped with 17 runs on 17 hits as the Pioneers prepare for a weekend series against Avila.

MNU got on the board in the first inning when Clayton Brandt led off with a single, moved to second when Jordan Jones was plunked, and scored on an error. In the bottom of the second, Jordan Eckley's 3-run bomb highlighted a 5-run inning to put MNU up 6-0. Blake Robberson threw 3 scoreless innings as his teammate built a big lead, and the Pioneers put up 4 more in the third to go up by 10. USM knocked Robberson from the game with a 4-run fourth (1 earned), but the Pioneers added a run in the fourth and fifth before blowing up again for 5 runs in the sixth. Caleb Swartz pitched 3 solid innings to close out the 12-run victory for a save. Blake Robberson struck out 5 in 4 innings for the victory. And Clayton Brandt (4-4, 4 R, 2 2B, RBI, SB, SF), Jordan Jones (2-3, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 HBP), Jordan Eckley (2-5, R, HR, 4 RBI, SB), Santiago Romero (3-4, 2 R, 2B, RBI), Tyler Taute (2-4, R, 2B, 2 RBI), and Trent Sullivan (2-4, 3 R, 2 RBI, SB) had big games at the plate.
