Pioneers Swept to Open HAAC Play

The Pioneers are 0-2 in the HAAC after a double header sweep at Avila on Tuesday. In Game 1, MNU scored a run in the top of the first, but Avila responded with 7 unanswered runs - 3 in the first, 1 in the second, and 3 in the third - to take a 6-run lead. In the fifth, Alexis Pacheco and Jess Peacock hit back-to-back doubles to score a run, but Avila got it back in the bottom of the sixth. MNU made a run in the top of the seventh when they loaded the bases with two outs. Hayley Gately followed with a single and Kimberly Montoya cleared the bases with a double to get MNU within 2, but the rally ended there and Avila won 8-6. Alexis Pacheco (2-3, 3 R, 2B, SB), Jess Peacock (2-4, R, 2B, RBI), and Kimberly Montoya (1-2, 2B, 3 RBI) led the offense.

In Game 2, Avila jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Pioneers came back in the fourth. Jessica Scarlett's 2-out RBI double got MNU on the board, and Jess Peacock's 2-run single tied the game at 3. Avila responded quickly, however, and rallied for 5 runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-3 lead. Neither team would score again and Avila completed the sweep.

MNU is 9-18 (0-2 HAAC). The next double header is Saturday at home vs. #11 Central Methodist (15-6) at 1:00.
