Pioneers Split With Valley

The Pioneers are 4-4 in the HAAC after a double header split vs. Missouri Valley on Tuesday. In Game 1, the Pioneers managed just 1 hit, but it was a big one in the bottom of the fourth. With MNU leading 1-0, Seth Lieser reached on a walk, and moved to second with Nelson Santiago was hit by a pitch. After a meeting at the mound, Kelvin Perez nailed the first pitch of the at bat down the left field line for a 3-run homer (watch here). The Pioneers were held hitless the rest of the way, but MNU starter Santiago Romero dominated the Vikings, keeping them scoreless with 1 hit until the seventh. In the top of the fourth with the Pioneers leading 1-0, two MNU defensive misplays put runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs. Romero struck out the next two batters, and the next hitter flew out to end the inning. The Vikings managed a run on 2 hits in the seventh, but Romero completed the game with 8 strikeouts for his 2nd win of the season. Kelvin Perez (1-2, R, HR, 3 RBI) had MNU's only hit.

In Game 2, the Vikings jumped on the Pioneers and put up 4 runs in the top of the first. MNU answered with 1 run in the bottom of the inning, but that was all MNU would get. Valley scored twice more in the third and another in the fourth, and won the game 7-1.

MNU is 16-10 (4-4 HAAC). MNU heads to HAAC-leading Peru State (17-10, 7-1) for a 4-game series this weekend.
