Robberson Shines in Road Victory

Blake Robberson threw the first MNU 9-inning complete game since the season opener in 2013 (Kyle Olson) to give the Pioneers their 8th straight victory on Thursday. MNU got on the board in the fourth at St. Mary when Carlos Vargas led off with a double and was sacrificed to third. Santiago Romero singled him home and eventually scored on a Kelvin Perez double to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. St. Mary answered in the fifth with 2 runs on 1 hit and 2 Pioneer errors, but MNU took back the lead in the sixth on another Perez double. In the top of the ninth, Seth Lieser's sacrifice fly scored Jordan Eckley to give the Pioneers a 4-2 advantage. In the bottom of the ninth with 1 out and a runner on first, St. Mary drove a ball deep to left field. The ball was caught but the runner had passed second base and didn't retouch on the way back to first. The double play ended the game and gave Robberson his second victory of the season. He allowed 3 hits and 1 earned run with just 98 pitches, and Clayton Brandt (2-5), Jordan Eckley (2-5, R, SB), Carlos Vargas (1-3, R, 2B, BB, HBP), Seth Lieser (1-2, RBI, HBP, SF, Sac), Santiago Romero (2-5, R, RBI, SB), and Kelvin Perez (2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI) led the offense.

MNU is 12-5. The next game is a double header at home on Saturday vs. Evangel (8-10) in the HAAC opener.
