Pioneers Win 3 of 4 in Texas

The Pioneers opened the season at Wayland Baptist and came away with 3 wins in 4 games over the weekend.

In Game 1, WBU opened the scoring with a 2-run third, but MNU responded with a 3-run fifth. After a double steal brought home 1 run, Brandon Jeffries singled home another to tie the game. One out later, Trent Sullivan's RBI double gave the Pioneers the lead. WBU retook the lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning, then scored 2 more in the sixth to win 5-3. Santiago Romero picked up his first loss as a Pioneer after going 8-0 last year, and Trent Sullivan (2-3, 2B, RBI) had 2 hits.

In Game 2, the Pioneers exploded for 9 first-inning runs en route to a 12-7 victory. Clayton Brandt led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a Sullivan single, and scored on a Carlos Vargas 2-run single. Two more runs scored on groundouts before Brandon Jeffries' 2-run double put MNU up 6-0, and MNU added 3 more thanks to errors before the dust settled. Clayton Brandt homered in the third and Brandon Jeffries added a sacrifice fly in the seventh, and MNU held on for the 5-run victory. Caleb Swartz picked up the win on the mound. And Brandt (3-4, 3 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, 2 SB), Sullivan (2-3, 2 R, RBI, SB), Vargas (1-4, R, 2 RBI), and Jeffries (2-3, R, 2B, 3 RBI, SF) led the offense.

In Game 3, Seth Lieser got MNU on the board with a 2-run homer in the first and the Pioneers never trailed. The Pioneers scored twice in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to take an 8-0 lead. WBU scored their lone run in the sixth, but that was all they got and MNU won 8-1. Carlos Vargas struck out 7 and allowed just 4 hits in a 6-inning victory. Phillipe Graham struck out 2 in 1 inning. And Seth Lieser (2-3, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI, BB), Jordan Jones (2-4), and Santiago Romero (2-2, 2 RBI, 2 BB) had 2 hits apiece.

In Game 4, WBU scored twice in the first, but MNU scored 3 in the second and 4 in the third to take a 7-2 lead. Carlos Vargas and Santiago Romero homered in the second, and Trent Sullivan, Jordan Eckley, Vargas, and Romero had RBIs in the fourth. WBU put up 3 in the fourth, but MNU added 2 more in the sixth for a 9-5 victory.
