MNU Comes Back Twice to Defeat Grand View

The Men's Soccer team took on Grand View University Saturday afternoon in the Defeat All Cancer game honoring Lake Lewis. Lake is a young boy from Olathe who is in the middle of a battle with brain cancer. He is winning that battle and MNU was proud to recognize Lake today by making him the honorary coach for the match.

The Pioneers did not start the game well and in just the 7th minute of the game, they found themselves down 1-0. Shay Zloczower scored from a double assist by Jordan Lucas and Jovan Petrovic. This goal seemed to wake MNU up a bit and the next few minutes of the game they created several chances but were unable to equalize. The tying goal would eventually come from Bryce McClanahan. In the 25th minute he took a back post pass from Cameron Wallace and somehow managed to head the ball in far post from a tough angle. The halftime whistle would come with the game tied at 1.

The second half started the same way for the Pioneers. Six minutes into the half they were down again. This time a foul in the box by MNU resulted in a penalty kick to GVU.  Petrovic stepped up and buried the spot kick. MNU responded well to being down and began to control the game and create chances. In the 65th minute, Lucas Machado beat his marker into the box and finished a left footed shot past the goalkeeper to tie the game. MNU continued to press and in the 77th minute, Machado was fouled outside the box. Eduardo Heringer put the direct free kick over the wall and into the upper corner. The Pioneers led the game 3-2 and saw the rest of the game out and win this important conference match.

For the game MNU outshot GVU 13-7, with SOG being 6-5. GVU's Brin Lapuh registered 3 saves in the match. MNU's Yann Passet had 3 saves and earned the win.  Grandview falls to 4-5-1 (2-2) on the year. MNU moves their record to 8-3-1 (3-1). The Pioneers have the week off and will travel to William Penn University on Saturday, October 10.
