Pioneers Earn Road Shutout

The Pioneers made their first trip to Oskaloosa, Iowa to take on new conference addition William Penn University on Saturday. They came away with a 3-0 win for their fourth conference win of the season.

MNU struggled a bit in the first half but still managed to enter the break leading 1-0. In the 27th minute, Alvaro Beltran headed the ball into the net off of a Eduardo Heringer cross. The Pioneers had several other chances but they could not add to their lead. In the dying  moments of the half, the Statesmen had an opportunity to level. A penalty kick was awarded from a handball in the box but the spot kick was played wide. This miss along with the halftime break seemed to wake MNU up a bit.

The second half started much better. Just four minutes in, Lucas Machado took a throw in from Frantzly Zephirin, beat his man with some individual brilliance and beat the keeper to the back post. MNU controlled the tempo of the game from this point on and in the 69th minute they put the game away. Heringer scored from close range from a double assist by Machado & Cameron Wallace. WPU created some chances in the final 15 minutes but could not beat Pioneer goalkeeper Yann Passet.

For the game MNU outshot WPU 15-8, with SOG being 8-3. The Statesmen goalkeeper was credited with 4 saves. Passet had 2 saves in earning the shutout. William Penn falls to 7-5-1 (4-2). MNU goes to 9-3-1 (4-1) on the season. Next up is a trip to Benedictine on Tuesday at 7:30.
