Weston Shines in Close Victory

Kyleesha Weston put up career highs in points and rebounds in a 56-53 victory over Evangel on Thursday. The win keeps MNU undefeated in HAAC play and sets up a battle vs. two 4-0 teams at Benedictine on Saturday. Evangel had the advantage in the first 10 minutes, opening up a 14-9 lead. But MNU went on a 10-1 run to grab a 4-point lead. The Crusaders fought off the run and closed the half strong, taking a 3-point lead into the locker room. The Pioneers trailed by 5 with 12 minutes left in the game, but held Evangel to 1 point over the next 6 minutes to take a 5-point lead. The game remained tight the rest of the way, but the Pioneers made just enough free throws to hold off the scrappy Crusaders.

MNU shot just 39% for the game, including 13-29 (45%) from the free throw line, but held Evangel to 32% shooting to get the win. Kyleesha Weston shot 7-11 for 18 points and 12 rebounds, both career highs. Tristin Wicks had 13 points and 9 rebounds. Daria Sprew battled foul trouble all night and put up 8 points and 7 rebounds. Megan Balcom had 5 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. And Bailey Rinehart added 8 big points off the bench.

MNU is 11-4 (4-0 HAAC). The next game is Saturday at Benedictine (11-5, 4-0) at 2:00.
