Pioneers Hold off Ravens to Claim Top Spot in HAAC

The Pioneers are 5-0 in the HAAC after a 59-57 victory at Benedictine on Saturday. The win puts MNU in sole possession of first place and is their 12th consecutive HAAC victory dating back to last season. Benedictine started the game on an 8-2 run and led by 5 after 10 minutes of play. MNU put together a 9-0 run to take a 4-point lead and pushed it to 8 late in the first half. The Ravens cut the deficit to 3 at halftime and started the second half well to take a 4-point lead in the opening minutes, but the Pioneers used a 12-3 to take control. Benedictine cut the MNU lead down to 1 possession several times but were unable to capture the lead. In the closing seconds, the Ravens had the ball at midcourt with a 2-point deficit. A nice inbounds play found the Ravens under the basket, but the running layup was defended well and the Pioneers escaped with the victory.

Kyleesha Weston had 13 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Daria Sprew had 11 points and 15 rebounds. Megan Balcom added 10 points and 4 steals. Jasmine Webb recorded 10 points off the bench. And Tristin Wicks had 6 blocks.

MNU is 12-4 (5-0 HAAC). The next game is Thursday at Peru State (3-11, 0-5) at 5:30.
