Pioneers Start Fast, Hold Off Graceland


Stats | Highlight | MNU led 17-0 before 7 minutes had passed in Saturday's 34-20 victory over Graceland. It is the 9th straight victory over the Yellowjackets. A 7-play 75-yard opening drive ended with a Javon Taylor 1-yard touchdown run, and the Pioneers recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to set up deep in Graceland territory. Three plays later, Trent Hedlund found Wesley Foryoh for a 16-yard strike and MNU led 14-0. The defense forced a 3-and-out, and DeRahn Williams returned the punt 67 yards to the Graceland 14-yard line. Cristian Casilla nailed a 33-yard field goal, and MNU led 17-0. Graceland ended the quarter with a field goal, but MNU started the second quarter with a Hedlund-to-Chris Fields touchdown to take a 21-point lead.

Graceland answered with a 17-play 85-yard touchdown drive, and the half ended with MNU leading 24-10. The Yellowjackets started the second half with a drive ending in a field goal, and that was the only scoring of the quarter. Casillas drilled a 41-yard field goal to open the fourth, and DeRahn Williams returned the next Graceland punt 75 yards for a touchdown. Graceland ended the game with a 10-play 80-yard touchdown drive, and MNU won 34-20.

Williams accounted for 185 return yards and a touchdown. Hedlund was 13-27 for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns. Deron Kirkwood caught 3 passes for 61 yards. Javon Taylor had 16 carries for 78 yards and a touchdown. And Cristian Casillas connected on field goals from 33 and 41 yards. Aaron Mossbarger and Justin Vargas led the defense with 8 tackles apiece. And Jarad Bader, DeMarco Kemp, Kenny Watson, Malcolm Majors, and Mossbarger recorded sacks.
