Box Score 2 The Pioneers dropped an extra inning first game, but exploded in the second game to earn a road split at Graceland on Saturday. In Game 1, MNU got on the board in the top of the 3rd when with 2 outs,
Lynsey Keith reached on an error and moved to second on a
Stephanie Valenzuela infield single.
Hayley Gately followed with a single to score Keith, and MNU took a 1-0 lead. Graceland tied the game with 2 outs in the sixth and the game went all the way to the tenth inning. A runner is placed on 2nd base to start the 10th per the international tie-breaker rule, but the Pioneers failed to bring a run home in the top of the inning. Graceland succeeded in the bottom of the inning, and the Yellowjackets won 2-1. Gately (2-5, 2B, RBI) had 2 hits and an RBI for the Pioneers.
In Game 2, MNU jumped all over Graceland. The Pioneers took advantage of 3 errors, 2 hit batsmen, and 4 singles to plate 8 runs in the top of the first. Graceland answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning, but the Pioneers got it right back in the second. After 15 straight batters were retired, MNU broke through again with 2 runs in the fifth, and the defense held on to the 10-run lead to win via the mercy rule.
Megan Schwindler allowed 2 hits and struck out 6 in the victory, and Gately (2-4, R, RBI),
Vanessa Arandules (2-3, R, RBI),
Ana Tavarez (2-2, 2 R, RBI, HBP), and
Alexis Pacheco (2-3, 2 RBI) had 2 hits apiece.
MNU is 16-8 (9-3 HAAC). The next double header is Tuesday at Culver-Stockton (15-19, 6-8) at 2:00.
