Pioneers Survive St. Gregory's

The #16 Pioneers remained undefeated with a last-second 1-point victory over St. Gregory's on Saturday. SGU flipped the script on MNU in the early going, jumping out to a 15-3 lead after 7 minutes of play. The Pioneers righted the ship and went on a 10-0 run to get back in the game, but never had the lead in the first half. After a 3-pointer put SGU up by 5 to start the second half, MNU went on a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game. St. Gregory's responded, however, and led by 7 with 10 minutes left. The teams battled for the next few minutes and SGU had a 5-point lead with 1:41 to play. MNU's Jasmine Webb collected an offensive rebound and hit 2 free throws to close the gap, and after the Pioneers made a stop, Megan Balcom drilled a 3 from the top of the key to tie the game. St. Gregory's had a chance to take the last shot in the final possession, but missed with around 10 seconds left to give MNU a chance. Shadequa Longus ran the break and drew a foul with 1 second left. After splitting the free throws, SGU's desperation heave went begging and the Pioneers escaped with the 60-59 win. MNU's largest lead of the game was 1 point.

Shadequa Longus led the Pioneers with 13 points and 6 assists. Daria Sprew and Tristin Wicks had 11 points apiece. Martyna Kudziela had a team-high 7 rebounds. And Kyleesha Weston had 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals off the bench.

MNU is 5-0. The next game is Wednesday at 2013-14 NAIA Fab Four team John Brown (0-3) at 7:00.
