Pioneers Pick Up First Win

Nate Launius put up a career-high 29 points in MNU's 80-68 victory over Grand View in the Jeff Uphaus Memorial Tournament on Friday. The Pioneers scored first and trailed just once in a game which was tight throughout. MNU built leads and Grand View reeled them back in several times on the night, as MNU led by as many as 11 in the first half. An 8-point halftime lead was whittled all the way down to a 1-point Grand View lead after a 10-0 Viking run, but the Pioneers quickly got back on top after a David Nelson 3-pointer. The bucket sparked a 9-0 Pioneer run to take back control of the game, but Grand View fought back to get within 2 with 5 mintues remaining. Launius responded with a 5-point burst of his own, and GVU went cold. MNU finished the final 2 minutes on an 11-2 run to win by 12.

Launius had 29 points on 9-16 shooting and a game-high 4 assists and 2 steals. Justin Randall had 9 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. Hudson Welty had 8 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks. And Gabriel Jordan had 6 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals off the bench.

MNU is 1-4. The next game is November 24 at Cal State-San Marcos (2-0).
