Men's Soccer Tie Third Straight Game

#10 MNU and #13 Oklahoma Wesleyan Play to a 1-1 Draw

Stats | The MNU Men's Soccer team must like to play overtimes. For the third straight game the Pioneers played the game through double overtime only to have a draw be the final result. This time the final score line was 1-1 and MNU had the lead until the final minutes. The game was a very intense match with 25 fouls called and 4 yellow cards given. What you would expect from 2 teams who came into today's game undefeated.

MNU got on the board first in the 13th minute. Kalev Saarna played Trent Remmich in on a through ball and he was able to beat the goalkeeper for his 5th goal of the season. MNU missed 2 other clear chances in the half as OWU were pressing for the equalizer. With so many men committed to the attacking third, MNU struggled to gain any type of possession in the match. The game became a match of who could kick it the furthest. Very different for those who are used to watching MNU play the last 2 years.

In the second half not much changed. OKWU continued to press and were very dangerous with their long throw-ins and set pieces. MNU settled in a bit better and were able to produce 3 clear changes on goal to add to the lead but each time they failed to finish. And then with just 2:18 left on the clock, OKWU scored off of a set piece to tie the game at 1-1. In the overtime periods each team were able to create a couple of chances but nothing to change the result of the game.

For the game each team had 21 shots. OWU's goalkeeper was credited with 3 saves. MNU's Chris Eriksson was credited with 6 saves. OWU moves their record to 4-0-1. MNU moves to 2-0-3. The next game is on the road at Friends University in Wichita, KS. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm on Wednesday, September 12.
