The MNU Men's Soccer team lost their first game of the year Tuesday night at Baker University. In a great conference rivalry that has evolved into an epic match every year, this game was a mirror image of last year's conference championship game. In that game, Baker came into the game undefeated and ranked #2 in the nation. MNU won the game 2-1 to claim the conference tournament championship. This year, MNU came into the game undefeated and ranked #9 in the nation. Baker was able to win the game 1-0.
The first half was scoreless and each team only had 3 shots. The game was a clash of styles with Baker playing very direct and MNU trying to string passes together. Each team created a few good chances on goal but for the most part the half was spent with 50/50 challenges, throw-ins, and set pieces. Not a pleasing game to watch but definitely full of intensity.
The second half wasn't much different. MNU did a better job of establishing a rhythm with their passing game, but could not maintain it long enough to take full control of the game. Baker continued to play kick ball and this forced MNU to continuously reestablish field position every possession. Eventually this tactic paid off and in the 61st minute, Baker's Odaine Sinclair scored a screamer of a goal. MNU stepped up their pressure and had a couple of chances but Baker's defense stayed organized. The game ended and MNU was shutout for the first time this year.
For the game Baker outshot MNU 12-7, with SOG being 4-2. Brendan Allen was credited with 2 saves for Baker. Chris Eriksson was credited with 3 saves for MNU. Baker moves their record to 5-4-3 (2-1) on the season. MNU falls to 8-1-5 (1-1-1). The next game for the Pioneers is on Saturday at Culver-Stockton College.
