MNU Splits @ Ottawa

In a rematch from last year's national tournament, MNU split a double header at Ottawa on Thursday. In Game 1 with the score tied at 1, the Pioneers scored twice in the fourth. With 2 outs and a runner on, Jenny Polivka tripled to give MNU the lead. An error brought Polivka home, and MNU led 3-1. But Ottawa came right back with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, and broke the game open with 3 runs on 5 hits in the fifth. The Pioneers could not come back and dropped the first game 6-3. Jen Costa (2-4, 2B), Alexis Folkerts (2-3, R, 2B), and Jenny Polivka (1-2, R, 3B, RBI, BB) led the offense.

In Game 2, the Pioneers exploded on offense and won 15-1 in 5-innings via the mercy rule. In the second inning Taylor Ryal led off with a single and the next 4 Pioneers reached base, capped by a Leslie Jones 2-run homer, her fourth of the year. The 6-run inning put MNU up by 5 and they kept the pressure on for the rest of the game. A run in the third, 3 more in the fourth, and 5 in the fifth put the Pioneers up by 14 and ended the game after the fifth. Jessica Hull (5-3) and Gale Christner combined on a 1-hitter, and Jen Costa (1-2, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, SF), Taylor Ryal (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI), Annie Duffner (1-1, 2 R, RBI), Ashley Salter (2-4, R, 2B, RBI), Emily True (1-3, 2 R, 2B, RBI), Alexis Folkerts (1-2, R, 2B, 2 RBI), and Leslie Jones (1-2, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB) had big games at the plate.

The Pioneers are 24-8 (9-3 HAAC). The next game is a non conference double header on Saturday vs. William Woods (19-12) at 2:00.
