The Pioneers suffered their first conference loss of the season, but managed to salvage a split at Baker on Friday. In Game 1, Jen Costa allowed just one hit through 9 innings, but the Pioneers were also held scoreless as the game went 10 innings. In the tenth, a walk and a double put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. Back-to-back hit batsmen ended the game and gave MNU their first conference loss after 21 straight HAAC victories (dating back to 2010). Costa struck out 16 and allowed 2 hits in the tough-luck loss, and
Ashley Salter (2-4) had 2 hits for MNU.
In Game 2, the Pioneers scored a run in the first with help from 2 Baker errors, but the Wildcats tied the game in the second with a solo homer. MNU took the lead for good in the third when
Chelsea Bapst led off with a single, and Jen Costa followed with an RBI triple.
Taylor Ryal drove home Costa with a single, and the Pioneers took a 3-1 lead. Neither team scored the rest of the way and MNU won Game 2.
Kayla Harris (8-1) scattered 5 hits and allowed 1 run in 5 innings for her 8th victory, Jess Hull pitched the final 2 innings for the save, and Jen Costa (1-3, R, 3B, RBI),
Taylor Ryal (2-3, RBI), and
Alexis Folkerts (1-2, 2B, BB) led the offense.
The Pioneers are 20-5 (7-1 HAAC). The next game is a double header at non-conference Bethany on Saturday at 1:00.
