The MNU Men's Soccer team took out their offensive frustrations on Missouri Baptist Saturday afternoon. In the home opener for the Pioneers they were able to walk away with a 7-0 win. MBU did not have an answer to the Pioneers possession and ball control. They did well to go into the halftime only down by 1, but the second half was a different story. For the game, six different MNU players were able to score.
In the first half at the 33 minute mark,
Michael Shadfar had a nice goal that was played in by
Cam Cundiff. After missing quite a few chances in the half the Pioneers went into halftime with a lot of game left to be played. "Our possession and ball movement were good in the first half," stated Coach Wardlaw. "But we lacked quality in the final third. The second half was much better and we were able to keep our rhythm throughout the game quite well."
The second half became a scoring barrage.
Luis Padilla, with an assist from
Trent Remmich, got things going at the 53 minute mark. At the 62 minute mark Cam had the goal of the game with a 30 yard strike into the far upper corner. Remmich scored at the 67 minute mark off a Shadfar assist to make it 4-0.
Belrum Vartanian came in off the bench and scored 2 goals at the 80th and 85th minute.
Cody Maupin assisted one of those and then Belrum returned the favor for Cody to score his goal in the 90th minute.
For the game, MNU outshot MBU 25-5; with SOG being 14-2. Corner kicks were 4-3 in MNU's favor. MBU's goalkeeper was credited with 7 saves in the game.
Matt Gow and
Bret Olendorff combined for the shutout and Gow was credited with 2 saves for the game.
MNU's next game will be in the Pioneer Invitational this coming weekend, September 17-18. On Friday, September 17 at 5:15pm the Pioneers will take on Westminster College (UT). Westminster is currently ranked #17 in the NAIA National Poll. On Saturday at 3:15pm MNU will take on Hannibal-LaGrange (MO). With the win today the Pioneers move to 3-1 on the season.
