In the final game of the year for the Men's Soccer team, the Pioneers defeated defending conference champs Benedictine College by a score of 1-0 this afternoon at Pioneer Field. MNU did not qualify for the conference playoffs by the narrowest of margins. Benedictine will move on to the conference playoffs that will start next week.
With essentially nothing to play for, the Pioneers came out and put on a clinic. They dominated the game from the first whistle and had the look of a team that was very motivated. “I was very proud of the guys today and the way that they played,” stated Coach Wardlaw. "They very easily could have just mailed this one in but they came out and showed great character and fully deserved the result.” MNU got on the board in the 15th minute of the first half.
Trent Remmich scored his team leading 13th goal of the year off of assists by
Oumar Seck and
Michael Shadfar. This would prove to be the only goal of the game as neither team really created many chances. The game was played mostly in the midfield and MNU did a great job of managing the game after the goal.
Matt Gow and
Bret Olendorff split time to earn the shutout.
For the game the shot count was 10-10 with SOG being 3-3. Corner kicks were 2-1 in MNU's favor. BC's goalkeeper was credited with 2 saves. Matt and Bret had 3 saves for MNU. Benedictine falls to 10-5-1 on the year, and 5-4 in conference. MNU ends their year with a final record of 9-7-1, and 4-4-1 in the conference.
Thanks to all the guys for a great year and especially to the seniors for the time and effort they have given to MNU over the years.
