The Men's Soccer team picked up a 3-1 conference victory over Avila University Wednesday night. It was a crucial game for both teams as each were fighting to get in the conference playoffs.
MNU came out strong and scored the first goal in the 8th minute of play.
Trent Remmich scored after
Gyer Vierthaler played him a great ball that split the defense and put Trent in on the goalkeeper. The game stayed at 1-0 through the rest of the half. MNU had a few more opportunities to put the game away but did not capitalize and Avila was very aggressive in trying to get the goal back.
In the second half, MNU once again came out strong and in the 51st minute
Luis Padilla scored an unassisted goal to make the score 2-0. Just 3 minutes later
Belrum Vartanian scored an unassisted goal of his own after some incredible individual dribbling that left the defenders grasping at air. Avila did not give in and just 30 seconds after the restart they scored a goal of their own to make the score 3-1. Each team created a few chances in the remainder of the half but the game never really took on a rhythm of any kind.
For the game, MNU outshot Avila 13-12, with SOG being 9-7 in MNU's favor. Corner kicks were 5-3 in Avila's favor. AU's goalkeeper was credited with 6 saves.
Matt Gow played the entire 90 minutes for MNU and was credited with 6 saves as well. Avila falls to 5-9-2 on the year and 2-5 in the conference. MNU improves to 8-6-1 on the year and 3-3-1 in the conference. MNU's next game is at William Jewell on Saturday night at 7:30pm. Jewell is currently ranked #9 in the country and is tied for first place in the conference.
