After a demoralizing performance against Park University on Wednesday night the MNU Men's Soccer team rebounded today with a convincing 5-0 win over Mt. Mercy University. The Mustangs came into the game with a 10-1 record and they were receiving votes in last week's NAIA National Top 25 poll. MNU had something to prove and came out with an intense focus that they were able to maintain throughout the match.
It didn't take long for the Pioneers to get on the scoreboard. At the 5 minute mark
Luke Pontin scored his first goal off of an assist by
Michael Shadfar. Pontin then solidified his brace at the 17 minute mark with a beautiful possession sequence that ended with
Trent Remmich sliding the ball across the box for Luke to put away. The half ended with MNU up 2-0 and in the second half the story was not much different. At the 60 minute mark Shadfar scored a goal off of a corner kick.
Luis Padilla and Pontin were credited with the assists. Remmich then added to his assist with a brace of his own in the 69th and 82nd minute.
Cody Maupin was credited with the assist on the first and Padilla on the second.
For the game MNU out shot MMU 13-6, with SOG being 8-1. Corner kicks were 2-1 in MNU's favor. Mt. Mercy played 2 goalkeepers in the match and they were credited with 3 saves.
Matt Gow played all 90 minutes for MNU and earned the shutout with 1 save. Mt. Mercy falls to 10-2 on the year. MNU improves to 5-4. The Pioneers travel to Baker University on Tuesday in a conference match that will kick off at 7:30pm.
