Pioneers Fall to #6 Grand View

OLATHE, Kan. – MNU fell 35-13 to No. 6 Grand View, the two-time defending NAIA national champion, Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Stadium.

Grand View established control early, scoring touchdowns on each of its first two possessions to build a 14-0 first-quarter lead. The Vikings opened the game with a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, then went 71 yards in six plays on their next possession.

MNU responded with its best drive of the first half. Starting at its own 23 late in the opening quarter, the Pioneers went 77 yards in nine plays, and Seth Dazet found Hunter Roddy for a 5-yard touchdown just three seconds into the second quarter. Luke Hardman's extra point cut the deficit to 14-7.

Grand View answered immediately. The Vikings needed only three plays to travel 71 yards, scoring on a 66-yard pass to restore the two-touchdown margin at 21-7 with 13:24 remaining in the half.

MNU put together another sustained drive midway through the second quarter, moving 69 yards in 11 plays from its own 21 to the Grand View 10. The Pioneers came away empty after turning the ball over on downs with 4:42 left.

The MNU defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, but the Pioneers were unable to capitalize. Grand View eventually took over at the MNU 48 with one minute remaining and converted the short field into a touchdown with just three seconds left in the half to take a 28-7 advantage into the break.

Grand View extended the margin in the third quarter with an 11-play, 65-yard touchdown drive that made it 35-7.

MNU answered with its longest possession of the afternoon. The Pioneers marched 79 yards in 15 plays and consumed 8:02 before Dazet again connected with Roddy, this time for a 2-yard touchdown with seven seconds remaining in the third. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the score at 35-13.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter, as the Pioneer defense kept Grand View off the board over the final 15 minutes.

Grand View finished with 403 yards of offense, including 257 through the air and 146 on the ground. MNU totaled 255 yards, with 226 coming through the air. The Pioneers were limited to 29 rushing yards on 18 attempts. Grand View converted 8-of-13 third downs, while MNU finished 3-of-12 on third down and 2-of-5 on fourth down.

Dazet completed 31-of-40 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Isaiah Coppage led MNU with 70 receiving yards on six catches, while Marcus Royster added four receptions for 56 yards. Zane Hall caught seven passes, and Roddy hauled in four receptions with both Pioneer touchdowns.

Defensively, Malaki Bouchard led MNU with eight tackles. Matthew Potucek, Kevin Ledesma-Garcia and Deon Burtin each recorded seven. Sam Kile and Terry Vester each recorded a sack.
