OLATHE, Kan. – MNU opened Heart play with a 1-0 victory over St. Ambrose on Saturday at Pioneer Field, remaining unbeaten through their first five matches.
The Pioneers controlled the match from start to finish, outshooting the Fighting Bees 21-2 and holding St. Ambrose without a shot in the second half. MNU also earned seven corner kicks to just two for the visitors.
MNU created several chances in the opening half but could not break through. Luna Etienne forced a save in the 20th minute, and Brecklyn Hardman hit the crossbar just 26 seconds later. Megan Watson put another attempt on frame in the 34th as the Pioneers took 11 shots before halftime.
The breakthrough came in the 61st minute when Tindra Jarl scored with an assist from Etienne corner to give MNU the 1-0 lead. It proved to be all the Pioneer defense needed.
MNU continued to control possession and generate chances after taking the lead, finishing the second half with 10 shots while completely shutting down the St. Ambrose attack. Fiona Popetschnig was not required to make a save as the Pioneer defense allowed only two shots in 90 minutes, neither on goal.
Jarl finished with three shots, two on goal and the game-winner. Etienne recorded four shots and an assist, while Hardman led MNU with five shots. Maddie Lalman added two shots with one on frame.
Turning Point
After controlling the match without finding a goal for the first hour, MNU finally broke through at 60:59 when Tindra Jarl scored unassisted. St. Ambrose did not record a shot in the second half, allowing the Pioneers to make the one-goal advantage stand.
