OLATHE, Kan. – MNU scored twice in a span of just over five minutes in the second half to rally for a 2-1 victory over Southeastern on Wednesday. The Pioneers improved to 2-0 after overcoming a 1-0 halftime deficit and outshooting Southeastern 12-6 in the second half.
Southeastern got on the board late in the first half to go to the locker room with a 1-goal lead.
The match changed quickly after halftime as MNU's attack came to life. Luna Etienne forced a save in the 55th minute before scoring the equalizer at 54:59 off an assist from Maria Stumpf. Etienne nearly put MNU ahead just over a minute later when her shot hit the crossbar.
The Pioneers didn't have to wait much longer. At 60:21, Etienne set up Maddie Lalman for the go-ahead goal, completing MNU's comeback and giving the Pioneers a 2-1 advantage. MNU continued to create opportunities and finished the second half with 12 shots after taking just three in the opening 45 minutes.
Southeastern threatened down the stretch, but goalkeeper Fiona Popetschnig made four second-half saves to preserve the lead. She stopped shots in the 68th, 73rd, 79th and 84th minutes as the Pioneers held on for the one-goal victory.
MNU finished with a 15-11 advantage in shots and put six on goal compared to five for Southeastern. Etienne led the Pioneers with four shots, two shots on goal, a goal and an assist, while Quinncy Schiessler added four shots.
Turning Point
Trailing 1-0, MNU flipped the match with two goals in 5:22. Etienne tied it at 54:59 off Stumpf's assist, then set up Lalman for the go-ahead goal at 60:21. The Pioneers went from a one-goal deficit to a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
