Pioneers Settle for Split with UHSP

SHAWNEE, Kan. – MNU split a doubleheader with UHSP on Wednesday, taking Game 1 with an 8-3 victory before falling 6-5 in 8 innings in Game 2.

In Game 1, MNU jumped ahead early and never looked back behind a strong performance in the circle from Mandy Brown. The Pioneers wasted little time getting on the board in the first inning. Danica Hobbs walked, stole second, and came around to score when Brie Manwarren ripped an RBI double to left center. Later in the inning, Manwarren scored on an error to give MNU a 2-0 lead. MNU added 2 more runs in the 3rd inning. Lailah Simmons led off with a single and scored on an RBI single from Senne Imel. Dakoda Hobbs followed with a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Imel and pushed the lead to 4-0.

The offense broke the game open in the 4th inning with 4 more runs. Molly Nicas delivered an RBI single, Imel added another RBI hit, and Andi Clements and Dakoda Hobbs each contributed RBI singles to extend the advantage to 8-1.

Brown scattered seven hits while striking out 12 across 7 innings to secure the complete-game win for the Pioneers.

Game 1 Turning Point
The 4-run 4th inning gave MNU full control.

Game 1 Individual Leaders
Mandy Brown struck out 12 in a complete-game victory. And Danica Hobbs (2-3, 2 R, BB, 2 SB), Brie Manwarren (1-3, 2 R, 2B, RBI, SB), Senne Imel (2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI), Aariana Paprocki (3-4), Andi Clements (2-4, RBI), and Dakoda Hobbs (1-2, 2 RBI) had big games at the plate.

In Game 2, MNU built a lead early but UHSP rallied late and won in extra innings.

The Pioneers struck first in the opening inning when Danica Hobbs singled and scored on an RBI double from Brie Manwarren. UHSP tied the game in the 2nd, but MNU quickly regained the lead as Aariana Paprocki doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Kayleigh Neill to make it 2-1.

The game remained tight until the 5th inning when the Pioneers delivered their biggest swing. Danica Hobbs reached base and Lailah Simmons was hit by a pitch before Molly Nicas launched a 3-run home run to left field, pushing MNU ahead 5-1.

UHSP responded with a 4-run seventh inning to tie the game at 5 and force extra innings. In the eighth, UHSP brought home the go-ahead run on an RBI single, and the Pioneers were unable to answer in the bottom half.

Aly Turner struck out 10 in 6 innings. And Danica Hobbs (3-5, 2 R), Lailah Simmons (1-2, R, BB, HBP), Molly Nicas (1-4, R, HR, 3 RBI), and Aariana Paprocki (2-4, R, 2B) led the offense.
