OLATHE, Kan. – MNU split Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader with Graceland, overcoming a lopsided Game 1 defeat by responding with a victory in Game 2.
In Game 1, MNU's offense showed immediate life despite a disastrous opening frame. After surrendering 9 runs in the top of the 1st, the Pioneers answered with 3 homers in the bottom - Christian Ramos, Jeremy Morales, and Noah Castillo all went deep - to cut the deficit to 9-4 and get MNU within shouting distance.
However, Graceland's offense proved too explosive to contain. The Yellowjackets added runs in the 2nd and 4th before breaking the game open again with a 7-run 5th inning, highlighted by Rafael Calcano's second grand slam of the game.
MNU mounted one final push in the 6th, as Jonathan Phillips drove in a run and Ronnie Rowley launched a 3-run homer, but the early deficit was too much to overcome in an 18-8 loss.
Game 1 Turning Point
Graceland's 9-run 1st inning was enough.
