CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – An early goal from Tindra Jarl and another strong defensive performance carried #15 MNU to a 1-0 victory at Mount Mercy on Saturday night.
The Pioneers needed just over two minutes to take the lead. Raquel Fernandez set up Jarl in the third minute for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Mount Mercy generated its best stretch of the first half shortly afterward, putting two shots on goal less than a minute apart in the 11th minute. Fiona Popetschnig stopped both to preserve the early advantage.
MNU continued to create opportunities, with Meredith Veer forcing a save in the 26th minute and Valerie Veloz putting another shot on target in the 43rd. The Pioneers took the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
The Pioneers nearly doubled the lead after the break. Jarl put a header on goal in the 59th minute and forced another save in the 73rd, but MNU was unable to find an insurance goal.
That left the defense to protect the one-goal margin. Mount Mercy managed just three shots in the second half and only one on goal. Popetschnig made that final save in the 86th minute, and Mount Mercy was reduced to 10 players following a red card at 86:21.
MNU finished with a 10-7 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal, and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Jarl accounted for three of MNU's five shots on goal and scored her second game-winning goal of the season. Fernandez recorded the assist, while Popetschnig made three saves to earn the shutout.
