OLATHE, Kan. - #1 MNU opened the season with a 1-1 draw vs. John Brown University on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles got the scoring started when a quick counter resulted in a breakaway chance, and JBU led 1-0 in the 16th minute. Five minutes later, a scramble in the box led to 2 close shots for the Pioneers. The first was saved by the keeper, and the second was saved by a diving defender's hand, resulting in a red card and penalty kick. Rick Hovinga buried the opportunity, and the game was tied at 1. Playing a man down the rest of the way, JBU packed the box and limited opportunities for the Pioneers. Despite winning the corner kick stat 12-1, MNU couldn't find the game winner and had to settle for a draw.
