Location: Stryker Sports Complex - Wichita, Kan.

WICHITA, Kan. – MNU battled to a 1-1 draw against #5-seeded Cumberlands on Thursday, but fell 6-5 in a dramatic penalty shootout in the NAIA National Championship Quarterfinals.

The Pioneers found themselves trailing early after a goal from Cumberlands in the 4th minute, but MNU was able to control possession for a significant portion of the match. Despite facing relentless pressure, goalkeeper Tobias Stirl recorded five critical saves to keep the match within reach.

In the dying seconds of regulation, the Pioneers were able to set up a final free kick from a dangerous spot. Tinashe Simbo sent a ball into the area (which included all 10 remaining Pioneers), and Josh Hodgson scored a heroic equalizer, sending the match into extra time.

Both teams battled through two tense overtime periods without finding the back of the net.

In the shootout, MNU converted their first four shots while Cumberlands missed one. Poised to rush the field and advance to the next round, MNU was disappointed when the Cumberlands keeper came up with the save. Both teams converted the 6th, and Cumberlands made their 7th. But the Pioneers were turned away again, and Cumberlands celebrated their advancement to the national semifinals.

Josh Hodgson's last-minute equalizer salvaged the match and pushed it to overtime, giving MNU a chance to fight for the semifinals in the shootout.
