FAYETTE, Mo. – MNU made history on Tuesday with a 2-1 comeback victory over #12 Central Methodist, claiming the Pioneers' first-ever conference championship (regular season or post) and securing their fourth trip to Nationals. After trailing in the second half, MNU struck back with two late goals to seal the win and the conference tournament title.
CMU controlled the action in the first half, but the MNU defense held firm and the game was scoreless at the break. In the 63rd minute, the Eagles finally broke through. CMU continued to control possession, but the Pioneers managed 2 shots on goal in the final 15 minutes, and both found the back of the net. In the 76th minute, Bella Leon collected a pass from Luna Etienne, settled the ball and maneuvered around a defender, and fired a shot from 18 yards out. The fully-stretched keeper couldn't get to it, and the game was tied at 1.
In the 87th minute,
Emily Carrasco and
Thayline Teixeira combined for a beautiful connection despite being out-manned 4-2. Carrasco passed to Teixeira, and the Conference Newcomer of the Year threaded a perfect pass through the defense back to Carrasco, who beat the keeper for the go-ahead goal.
The final minutes were a mad scramble, but the defense fought off the onslaught to secure the win.
