Maple's and Martinez's Heroics Lead to Sweep of Evangel

OLATHE, Kan. - The Pioneers swept a 4-game series vs. Evangel on Thursday and Friday. In Game 1, Sean Maple got MNU on the board with a solo homer in the bottom of the 2nd. Evangel answered with a 2-run homer in the 3rd, but a Brysen Hamilton 2-run single in the 4th put MNU back in front. The Valor took the lead again with 2 in the top of the 5th, but Sean Maple's 2nd go-ahead homer of the game made it 5-4 Pioneers in the bottom of the inning. Four more runs scored to give MNU a 9-4 lead, and the Pioneers held on to win by that score.

Game 1 Individual Leaders
Zach Trevino struck out 6 in 5.2 innings. Bryce Brecklin struck out 2 in 1.1 innings for the save. And Brycen Sherwood (1-2, RBI, 2 HBP), Sean Maple (2-3, 3 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI, HBP), Joey Calamaio (1-3, 2 R, 2B, BB), and Brysen Hamilton (1-2, 2 RBI, BB) led the offense.

In Game 2, the Valor jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st, but starter Tyler Frieders escaped further damage by escaping a bases-loaded 1-out situation. In the bottom of the 1st with 2 outs, Javier Meledez crushed a solo homer to get MNU on the board. And Noah Castillo and Dionathan Cornet followed with back-to-back doubles to get within 1. Evangel scored single runs in the 2nd and 3rd, but doubles from Brycen Sherwood and Castillo led to 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. In the bottom of the 4th, Joey Calamaio led off with a single and stole second. Brysen Hamilton doubled him home, and a Sherwood sacrifice fly put MNU up by 1. Both teams scored 1 in the 5th, and Evangel tied it in the top of the 6th. In the bottom of the 7th with 1 out, 3 straight singles loaded the bases for Sean Maple. Game 2 Individual Leaders
Reece Helland struck out 3 in 3 innings of relief for the win. And Javier Melendez (2-3, 2 R, 2B, HR, RBI), Noah Castillo (3-4, R, 2 2B, RBI), Dionathan Cornet (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, SF), and Joey Calamaio (2-3, R, SB) had multi-hit games.

In Game 3, Dionathan Cornet's clutch 2-out 2-run single gave MNU a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st, and a Caleb Eiguren sacrifice fly made it 3-0 in the 2nd. Evangel fought back with a run in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th to tie it, and 1 more in the 5th to take a 4-3 lead. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 5th, Noah Castillo's RBI single tied the game. The game remained tied at 4 into the 8th inning, and Joshua Martinez took the 11th pitch of the at bat over the right field fence for a walk-off winner. Game 3 Turning Point

John Barry struck out 6 in 5 innings of a no-decision. Bryce Brecklin earned the win with 4 strikeouts in 3 innings of relief. And Brycen Sherwood (2-4, R, 2B), Javier Melendez (2-4, 2 R, 2B), Noah Castillo (2-3, RBI, BB), Dionathan Cornet (1-4, 2 RBI), Joshua Martinez (1-4, R, HR, RBI), and Joey Calamaio (2-3, 2 2B) led the offense.

In Game 4, Noah Castillo's 1st inning 3-run homer put MNU out in front, and the Pioneers ran away with a 5-run 4th and 3-run 5th. Sean Maple homered twice and MNU won 14-5. Game 4 Turning Point
