MARION, Ind. – MNU fought back vs. Georgetown in the closing seconds of regulation, but lost by 2 in overtime in the 1st Round of Nationals on Tuesday. The Pioneers won the 1st quarter 18-15 and led the 2nd quarter 10-2 to take an 11-point lead with 5 minutes until halftime. But the Tigers dominated the next 10 minutes. Georgetown trimmed the deficit to 4 at the break, then started the 3rd quarter with a 14-0 run to take an 11-point lead. MNU righted the ship to claw back to within 6 headed into the 4th, but still trailed by 6 with 38 seconds remaining in regulation.
Bi'Anna Pettis hit a 3 to cut the deficit in half with 21 seconds left, and MNU forced a turnover with 18 seconds left to get another chance. After a missed 3-pointer and an offensive team rebound, Pettis inbounded the ball under the basket to
Arielle Sargent. Sargent handed it back and Pettis nailed a step-back 3 to tie the game. A final defensive stand sent the game to overtime.
In the overtime period, Georgetown started with a 3 but the Pioneers tied it with just under 2 minutes left. MNU again trailed by 3 with 1 minute remaining, and
TrEl'Shawn Smith hit a layup to get it back to 1. After a Georgetown turnover, MNU had 3 chances to take the lead but could not convert. Georgetown finally got a rebound and got fouled, and hit the first free throw. The second attempt rimmed off, and MNU had 5 seconds to get a shot off. Smith's heave from just over half court barely missed, and the season came to a close.
Turning Point
Georgetown's 26-4 run spanning the end of the 2nd and into the 3rd turned an 11-point lead into an 11-point deficit.
