OLATHE, Kan. - The Pioneers opened the 2022 season in dominant fashion on Wednesday, scoring 8 goals and out-shooting Ottawa 28-1 in the shutout. Freshman
Sarah Assumma recorded the season's first goal in the 12th minute with an assist from
Cali Schechinger, then made it 2-0 in the 21st minute with an assist from
Hope Runyan. The score remained 2-0 into halftime, and the floodgates opened in the second half.
Giovanna Castro made it 3-0 in the 51st minute, assisted by
Renee Berak. And
Hope Runyan followed with her first goal with help from
Laura Torres in the 52nd minute. Castro earned her second goal - assisted by Assumma - for a 5-0 lead in the 53rd minute. Schechinger recorded her second assist as Torres made it 6-0 in the 62nd minute, and Assumma completed her hat trick for a 7-0 lead in the 70th.
Nicole Cortez capped the scoring in the 88th minute, with an assist from
Jacque Schwager, and MNU completed the shutout.
"Our first home game of the year in the books," said head coach
Bryce McClanahan. "From top to bottom our ladies dominated the match, playing good possession soccer. I was impressed with our strong start and then mentality to stay focused and hungry throughout the match. Love the goal production and the clean sheet. Great first step and looking forward to the next match at Briar Cliff."
