Pioneers Win Opener

The Basics
Score: MNU 3, Avila 0
Record: MNU (1-0), AU (2-3)
Location: Cook Center - Olathe, Kan.

OLATHE, Kan. - MNU started the 2022 season with a 3-0 victory over Avila on Tuesday. The scores were 25-20, 25-15, and 26-24. The Pioneers were in complete control of the first two sets, but Avila stayed right with MNU in the 3rd. The Eagles led 24-23, but after MNU's only timeout of the match, they scored the next 3 points to complete the sweep.

"1-0 is always a good feeling," said head coach Molly Karagyaurov. "The Cook Center was rockin' - shout out to the fans for coming out! We are still managing two injuries who we expect back soon. It's frustrating but we have a great support staff working hard to manage their needs. But volleyball-wise, the level on both teams is up for sure. My staff has worked really hard this off-season. This group of women just had an amazing pre-season with a lot of effort and growth. And that definitely showed! We have a balance of transfers and freshman. Both are being asked to contribute a lot. Both are working hard to earn their spots!

"On the varsity side, we had several bright spots in this match specifically. Mikayla's blocking performance was exceptional. Ariana had a double double with kills and digs. Katrina was asked to do multiple jobs and did so well. Charley's pressure from the service line allowed us to execute our game plan. Overall, I'm happy. It's august. We are 1-0. We have a lot of potential and are nowhere near to achieving that potential - that is EXACTLY where I want to be."

Turning Point
MNU dominated the first 2 sets to take control.

Individual Leaders
Ariana Arciniega had 11 kills and 12 digs. Avery Lowe added 8 kills. Lucie Maceckova had 7 kills and 3 blocks. Mikayla Johnson had 6 kills and 9 block. Katrina Davis had 18 assists and 10 digs. Savannah Crossland had 13 digs and 9 assists, and Charley Turner recorded 11 assists and 4 aces.

Up Next
MNU heads to Crete, Nebraska to face Dakota State and Doane (1-3) on Saturday (3-1) at 12:00 and 2:00.
