Offense Explodes in Weekend Sweep of Benedictine

OLATHE, Kan. - MNU scored 61 runs in an extremely windy 4-game sweep of Benedictine over the weekend. In Game 1, the Ravens jumped out to a 4-run lead thanks to a 2-out 3-run homer in the top of the 1st. But the Pioneers answered immediately with a Brycen Sherwood 2-run shot and Randy Fernandez 3-run shot in the bottom of the 1st to take the lead. Benedictine kept the pressure on, scoring single runs in each of the next 4 innings. But MNU a Joshuan Sandoval 2-out 3-run homer gave MNU the lead in the 4th, and a Frank Vogel 2-run shot gave the Pioneers an 11-9 lead in the 5th. In the bottom of the 6th, 18 Pioneers came to the plate and 15 of them scored - highlighted by a Mason Hunter grand slam in his first at bat of the season - to give MNU a 27-8 victory.

Zach Trevino battled to strike out 6 in 6 innings for the win. Reece Helland struck out all 3 batters he faced in the 7th. And Brycen Sherwood (2-4, 4 R, HR, 3 RBI, HBP), Noah Castillo (2-4, 2 R, 2B, 2 RBI, HBP), Mason Hunter (1-1, R, HR, 4 RBI), Joshuan Sandoval (2-5, R, HR, 5 RBI, BB), Randy Fernandez (3-5, 3 R, 2 2B, HR, 5 RBI), Ryan Leo (3-5, 3 R, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 SB), Frank Vogel (1-2, 4 R, HR, 2 RBI, 3 BB), and Dionathan Cornett (2-4, R, 2B, 3 RBI, SF) had multi-RBI games.
In Game 2, Drew Woodley led off the bottom of the 1st with a homer, and MNU scored in every inning en route to a 15-2 victory. Pitcher Noah Castillo struck out 8 in a complete game victory, and the Pioneers swept Friday.

Noah Castillo struck out 8 in a complete game victory. And Drew Woodley (4-4, 4 R, 2B, 2 HR, 3 RBI, BB), Brycen Sherwood (2-4, 3 R, 2B, HR, BB), Noah Castillo (3-5, R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI), Joshuan Sandoval (2-4, 2B, RBI, BB), and Randy Fernandez (3-5, 2B, 3 RBI) led the offense.

In Game 3, pitcher Eric Navarette dominated while his offense provided 5 runs of support. Two stolen bases led to 2 early runs, and Joshuan Sandoval launched a massive shot homer for a 3-0 lead in the 3rd. In the bottom of the 6th, and Brycen Sherwood 2-out 2-run single put the game out of reach, and MNU won 5-0.

Eric Navarette struck out a career-high 11 in a complete game 4-hit shutout. And Brycen Sherwood (2-4, 2 RBI) and Joshuan Sandoval (1-4, R, HR, RBI) drove in runs.
In Game 4, Drew Woodley led off the bottom of the 1st with a homer, and after a walk, Noah Castillo followed suit for a 3-0 lead. The Pioneers rallied for 3 more to take a 6-0 lead in the 1st, and extended throughout for a 14-1 victory. Joshuan Sandoval homered in the 2nd and Joshuan Martinez homered in the 6th, and MNU completed the sweep.

Kristian Hurtado struck out 6 in 5 innings for the win. Nathan Torres struck out 5 in 2 innings of work. And Drew Woodley (2-3, 2 R, HR, RBI, BB, SB), Joshua Martinez (1-1, R, HR, RBI), Brycen Sherwood (2-3, 2 R, 2B, RBI, BB, SB), Noah Castillo (3-5, R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI), Joshuan Sandoval (2-5, R, HR, RBI), Josh Torrance (2-4, 2 R, RBI), and Ryan Leo (2-4, 2 R, 2B) had big games at the plate.
