Pioneers Open the Season With Road Win

MESA, Ariz. - The Pioneers opened the 2022 season with a win at Benedictine-Mesa in Arizona on Wednesday. After MNU scored 1 in the top of the 1st, the Redhawks rallied for 3 in the bottom of the inning. The Pioneers tied it in top of the 2nd, but BC-Mesa scored single runs in the 2nd and 3rd to take a 5-4 lead. In the top of the 5th, an error with 2 outs led to 2 Pioneer runs, and the bullpen held firm the rest of the way for a 7-5 victory.

The 2 runs in the 5th turned the game around.

Individual Leaders
Zach Trevino struck out 8 in 6 innings for the win. Kristian Hurtado, Reece Helland, and Nathan Torres pitched 3 innings of scoreless relief. And Randy Fernandez (2-5, R, 2B, RBI), Brycen Sherwood (1-3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, HBP, SF), and Josh Torrance (1-3, R, 3B, BB) led the offense.
