Pioneers Take 2 of 3 from Benedictine

OLATHE, Kan. - MNU used a late comeback in Game 3 to win a 3-game series over Benedictine on Friday. In Game 1 on Thursday, MNU started fast and kept scoring in an 11-1 victory. The game was scheduled for 9 innings, but the 10-run rule ended things in the 7th. Joshuan Sandoval got the scoring started in the bottom of the 1st with a 2-run homer, and the Pioneers rallied for 2 more in the 2nd to take a 4-0 lead. Cristian Rivera's solo homer in the 3rd made it 5-0, and MNU blew it open with a 4-run 4th. Easten Garrett pitched around limited pockets of trouble while striking out 8, and MNU won their 6th straight.

Joshuan Sandoval's 1st-inning 2-run homer was all MNU needed.

Easten Garrett struck out 8 in a 7-inning complete game victory. And Randy Fernandez (2-4, 2 R, 2B, RBI, SB), Will Morris (2-3, 2 R, RBI, BB, 2 SB), Joshuan Sandoval (1-4, R, HR, 3 RBI), and Cristian Rivera (1-3, R, HR, 2 RBI, SF) led the offense.

In Game 2, (scheduled for 7 innings) MNU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd on RBIs from Will Morris and Joshuan Sandoval, but the Ravens responded immediately with a 3-run top of the 4th. MNU tied it in the bottom of the 4th, but the Ravens again took 1-run leads in the 5th and 6th. Randy Fernandez's RBI double scored Brycen Sherwood in the 6th, but the Ravens rallied for 2 in the top of the 7th. The Pioneers loaded the bases with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th, but a strikeout ended the game and MNU fell 7-5.

Benedictine's 2-run 7th was the difference.

Kyle Waller struck out 8 in a 5-inning no-decision. And Randy Fernandez (2-4, R, 2B, RBI), Joshuan Sandoval (3-4, RBI), Kyle Franklin (2-4, RBI), Cristian Rivera (2-3, R, BB), and Brycen Sherwood (3-3, 2 R, 3B, SB) led the offense.

In Game 3, (scheduled for 9 innings), the Pioneers fell behind 4-0 before even getting on base. The Raven pitcher was perfect through 5 until Jackson Berck spoiled it with a solo shot to lead off the 6th. Will Morris followed with a 2-run single to get the Pioneers within 1, but the Ravens rallied for 3 in the top of the 7th to push the lead back to 7-3. Doubles from Ryan Leo and Jackson Berck scored a run in the 8th, but MNU still trailed by 3 in the 9th. With 2 outs and 1 on, MNU started to rally. Brycen Sherwood and Kyle Franklin singled to load the bases, and Randy Fernandez followed with a 2-run single. After a hit batsman to re-load the bases, Joshuan Sandoval ended it with a shot into the right field corner.

Sandoval's walkoff double turned a deficit into a victory.

Game 3 Individual Leaders
Nick Michael pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief for the win. And Randy Fernandez (1-4, R, 2 RBI, HBP), Will Morris (1-4, 2 RBI, HBP), Joshuan Sandoval (2-5, 2B, 2 RBI), Ryan Leo (2-4, 2 R, 2B), Jackson Berck (2-4, R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI), and Brycen Sherwood (2-3, 2 R, HBP) had big games at the plate.​​​​​​​
