In MNU's first loss since February, #8 Freed-Hardeman defeated the Pioneers 76-67 in overtime on Saturday. The teams met in the second round of last year's national tournament where MNU defeated FHU 59-51. The teams went back and forth each quarter, but FHU held an 8-point lead with 4:30 remaining in the game.
Jayden Oliver hit back-to-back threes, and
Ashley Gibson scored with a foul to complete a 9-0 run to take the lead. The Lions hit a three to end the run and re-take the lead, but Gibson scored again to tie it. MNU had a chance to win it in regulation at the free throw line with 2 seconds left, but both shots missed and the game went into overtime.
In the overtime period, the Pioneers managed just one basket while the Lions scored 11 points to win 76-67.
Ashley Gibson shot 9-18 from the field and 10-11 from the line for 29 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals.
Jayden Oliver hit 4 threes for 15 points. And
Jovana Jovovic had 7 rebounds and 2 blocks off the bench.
MNU is 4-1 (3-0 Heart). The next game is Monday at Grand View (3-3, 2-2) at 5:30.
