Pioneers Defeat Benedictine

The Pioneers took on Benedictine College Tuesday afternoon at Pioneer Field in a Heart of America Conference match. After a lightning delay in the second half that lasted approximately one hour, MNU won the game 2-0.

The game started well for the Pioneers with the team creating several changes in the opening 15 minutes. The final finishing touch was not found however and the Ravens began to scratch out opportunities of their own. MNU's goalkeeper, Yann Passet, had a pivotal save on a cross that kept the game scoreless. This proved to be vital as just a few minutes later, Etienne Proult scored a goal to put MNU up 1-0.  His solo effort to fight for multiple loose balls in the box was rewarded as he poked the ball underneath the BC goalkeeper from close range. Just 5 minutes later and with only 40 seconds left in the half, MNU extended the lead. A nice passing sequence that ended with Proult assisting Matias Cabello for the calm finish sent MNU into the half time break with a 2-0 lead.

Fifteen minutes into the second half lightning moved into the area. After the delay and a quick warmup both teams came out to finish the final 30 minutes. MNU had two very good chances to extend the lead, but an errant shot and then another one off the bar kept the score at 2-0.

For the game MNU outshot BC 17-7, with shots on goal being 7-3. BC's goalkeeper was credited with 5 saves. Passet for MNU had 3 saves in earning the shutout victory. Benedictine falls to 3-3-1 (2-2) on the season. MNU is now 8-2-1 (5-1) on the year. They are currently ranked #9 in the latest Top-25 national poll and will head into their bye week before squaring off against Central Methodist University. Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm on Wednesday, October 12th in Fayette, Missouri.
