The MNU Men's Soccer team wrapped up the regular season on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Grand View University. With the win, the Pioneers are the outright 2016 Heart of America conference champions! This is their first outright title since 2008. They were co-champions in 2013Â & 2005. This year's championship earns MNU one of the two automatic bids to the National Tournament that the Heart holds. The second bid will be determined by the Conference Tournament that starts next week.
Earlier in the week the Pioneers secured at least a share of the conference title. Baker's loss to Missouri Valley solidified MNU's position. Because of that, today's game was a test of the team's resolve. A very tough Grand View team awaited and the Pioneers battled for the win. In the 8th minute,
Etienne Proult made a pass to
Matias Cabello. He got free from his defender and fired a left footed shot towards goal. The GVU goalkeeper got a hand to it but could only redirect the ball into the side netting. It turned out to be enough but MNU had to fight the Viking onslaught for the remainder of the game.
GVU outshot MNU 14-5, with shots on goal being 7-3. The Viking goalkeeper had 2 saves. MNU's
Yann Passet had a stellar game, coming up with 7 saves in the match. Grand View ends the regular season with a record of 11-6-1 (7-4-1). MNU finishes with a 14-2-1 (11-1) regular season record. They will await the Conference Tournament pairings to see who they face next. The game will be at home on Saturday, November 5th at 1pm.
