Pioneers Beat Graceland with Wiltshire's Winner in OT

In the Princess Bride, Westley must save his beloved Buttercup from the mysterious and treacherous quagmire of quicksand. Thinking fast, and grabbing a tree vine, he selflessly dives into certain death to retrieve his sinking lady. Oh yeah, spoiler alert!
Sometimes, though, the perils of quicksand aren't confined to the dangers of the Fire Swamp. Pits of nebulous muck can be found right in the middle of a soccer pitch, and one such trap was found in the middle of Pioneer park on a blustery, overcast Wednesday afternoon. The usual quick-paced possession and attack of the Pioneers just looked a bit sluggish, despite controlling most of the game.
However, even though the Pioneers didn't have their characteristic buzzing ball movement working this afternoon, they were still able to mount several attacks on the Graceland goal. Shots from forwards Taryn McClendon and Hannah Benedict, as well as midfielder Kelli Reid, were all rebuffed by Manaia Unutoa, the Yellowjackets' capable and sure-handed goalkeeper.
The Pioneers huffed and puffed, but they couldn't find their way in.
It was looking as if the day might end in another tie for the Pioneers, but that's when a hero decided to rescue the team from the quicksand. After fending off a Graceland attack, the Pioneers moved the ball back up the field, earning a corner. From the cross, a scramble ensued in the box and senior RaeAnn Wiltshire stepped up and poked the ball past the in-form keeper. With jubilation and relief the Pioneers celebrated another overtime victory. Some days the play isn't pretty, but a victory more than makes up for it.

The Pioneers will hope to continue their winning ways this Saturday, Senior Day, against Mount Mercy over the Homecoming weekend.
