The Pioneers snapped their 3-game skid with a 52-point outburst at Evangel on Saturday. After MNU punted on their first drive, Evangel scored on a 4-play 66-yard touchdown drive. The Pioneers punted again, but that was MNU's last punt until the 3rd quarter. A
Corey Tucker interception led to a 12-play drive which ended in a
Cristian Casillas field goal, and Evangel fumbled on the ensuing drive to set up the Pioneers in the red zone.
Trey Cooper found
Gio Gonzalez for a 19-yard touchdown, and MNU took a lead they would not relinquish. Several quick drives in a row resulted in touchdowns, and the Pioneers blew it open in the 2nd quarter. A 3-play, 4-play, 2-play, and 9-play drive saw MNU take a 38-7 lead at halftime.
MNU opened the second half with a 58-yard Cooper to
Devon Boyce connection on the first play, and MNU continued to increase the lead. Evangel scored a garbage time touchdown as the clock expired, and MNU won 52-21.
Trey Cooper was 11-20 for 253 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Javon Taylor carried 27 times for 171 yards and a touchdown. And
Dalton Inlow,
Austin Blackston,
Devon Boyce,
Dylan Meyers, and
Gio Gonzalez caught a touchdown.
Wesley Williams recorded 7 tackles with a forced fumble.
Justice Jardine forced a fumble. And
Elijah Dailey and
Corey Tucker grabbed interceptions.
"We came out and played a good game today." said
Brian Willmer. "The offense moved the ball well both running and passing. I felt the offensive line blocked well and Javon and Drake both ran hard and made good reads. It was fun to watch the athleticism of freshman
PJ Jones run the ball at end of the game. Trey Copper did a good job getting the ball down the field to host of wideouts,
Austin Blackston and
Dalton Inlow made some great catches. We made some changes to the personnel this week defensively and I felt those players responded well. We created more turnovers which were huge in setting up the offense.
Corey Tucker had a huge interception and continues to play well for us.
Elijah Dailey made a nice pick.
Justice Jardine continues to get better each week and had a big caused fumble. I am excited for this team and group of seniors to come home for homecoming this week."
The Pioneers are 4-3 (1-0 South). The next game is Homecoming vs. #2 Baker (7-0, 1-0) at ODAC at 2:00.
