MNU Comes Up Just Short at Peru State

The Pioneers are still winless on the road after a 24-20 loss at Peru State on Saturday. After an MNU fumble on the second play from scrimmage, Peru State went 31 yards in 5 plays to take a 7-0 lead. The Pioneers were stopped on 4th down on the ensuing drive, but returned the favor near the goal line to stop the Bobcats. MNU took over at their own 3-yard line and went 97 yards in 16 plays to tie the game. Trent Hedlund found Wesley Foryoh 3 times on the drive, including a 5-yard touchdown pass, to get the Pioneers back on track.

Peru State responded with a field goal to retake the lead, but Cristian Casillas' short field goal tied the game again. MNU forced a fumble and scored quickly on a Jakob Jordan touchdown run, and the Pioneers went to the locker room with a 17-10 lead. To start the second half, MNU forced a 3-and-out then drove 13 plays for a 27-yard field goal to take a 10-point lead. The Bobcats responded with a 12-play 70-yard drive to close the 3rd quarter, then forced a punt to open the 4th. A 10-play 55-yard touchdown drive gave Peru State a 24-20 lead, but MNU had 2 chances to retake the lead. The Pioneers were stopped on 4th and 7 from the 13, but a 3-and-out gave MNU the ball at the Peru 37 with 2:34 remaining. MNU converted twice on 4th and short to work their way to the 11-yard line and keep the game alive, but ran out of time and chances. Three incomplete passes as the clock ran out ended the game.

"It is frustrating when we had out opportunities and failed to capitalize on them," said coach Brian Willmer. "The defense needs to do a better job of getting off the field on 3rd down, and offensively we need to get the run game going again. I feel Trent [Hedlund] managed the game well, especially with his passes, to help give us a great chance to win the game."

Hedlund was 25-32 through the air for 262 yards and a touchdown. Javon Taylor carried 15 times for 54 yards. Wesley Foryoh caught 7 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown. Farrell Victor had 7 catches for 69 yards. And Aaron Mossbarger (11), Tanner Hamilton (10), and James Guerrero (10) recorded double digit tackles.

MNU is 2-3. The next game is Saturday at home (ODAC) vs. Grand View at 6:00 (4-1). The remaining games are vs. the Heart South division. The North and South champs receive automatice berths to the playoffs.
