Pioneers Advance to Nationals

The Pioneers finished runner up in the HAAC tournament on Monday, qualifying for Nationals for the second straight year. In the 1 o'clock game vs. Missouri Valley, the Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Trent Sullivan doubled and scored on an error, and Santiago Romero singled home Seth Lieser. In the second, Blake Robberson and Brandon Marrero singled with no outs. Clayton Brandt doubled them home, and MNU led 4-0. Starting pitcher Carlos Vargas dominated the Vikings, allowing just 1 unearned run while scattering 5 hits and striking out 8 in a complete game. The final pitch of the game was a strikeout, and MNU clinched a spot at Nationals. Vargas earned his 6th win of the season, and Clayton Brandt (3-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI, SB), Santiago Romero (2-4, RBI), and Blake Robberson (2-4, R) had multi-hit games.

The championship round against Peru State, the Pioneers needed to win twice to claim the tournament crown. MNU took a 1-0 lead in the first when Jordan Eckley was hit by a pitch with 2 outs, stole second, and scored on a Carlos Vargas single. In the second, Nelson Santiago singled and Brandon Marrero tripled him home. With 2 outs, Clayton Brandt's RBI single put MNU up 3-0. Trent Sullivan's first homer of the season put MNU up 4-0 in the fifth, and the Pioneers tacked on another run in the sixth on an error to take a 6-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth with one out, a single and 3 walks brought home a run and knocked starter Blake Robberson from the game. Reliever Zach Stinnett entered and promptly induced a 4-6-3 double play, and the Pioneers took a 5-run lead to the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bobcats again loaded the bases with 1 out, but a 5-4-3 double play ended the threat. Peru State made their comeback in the eighth when 4 straight hits brought in 3 runs and put the tying run at 3rd with no outs. A passed ball tied it at 6, and the game went into extra innings. In the bottom of the eleventh, the Bobcats tripled with 1 out, and a sacrifice fly ended the game and the tournament. Blake Robberson allowed just 4 hits while pitching into the sixth in a no-decision, and Trent Sullivan (2-6, R, 2B, HR, RBI), Jordan Eckley (1-3, R, BB, HBP, Sac, 3 SB), Carlos Vargas (2-4, RBI, 2 BB), Nelson Santiago (2-4, R, HBP), Santiago Romero (2-5), and Brandon Marrero (1-3, 3B, RBI, BB, HBP) led the offense.

MNU is 33-21. The next game will be in the Opening Round at Nationals at a site to be determined.
