Season Comes to a Close at HAAC Tourney

Each game was a shutout, and MNU was eliminated from the HAAC tournament after dropping 2 on Friday. In the morning game vs. Avila, neither team scored until the top of the sixth when a 1-out walk was followed by a stolen base and a triple to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Avila extended the lead in the seventh with 2 runs on 3 hits, and MNU trailed by 3. In the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers loaded the bases with 1 out to bring the winning run to the plate. But back-to-back strikeouts ended the game and sent MNU to the losers bracket.

In the first elimination game, the Pioneers faced Evangel and the offense came to life. In the top of the third, Lorena Martinez led off with a single and Alexis Pacheco reached on an error. Jess Peacock doubled them home, and MNU led 2-0. A Hayley Gately RBI single extended the lead, and the Pioneers kept it going in the fourth. A Kaity Wills bases-loaded walk make it 4-0, and Gately knocked in 2 more with a single to cap the scoring. Taylor Pearcy and Megan Schwindler combined to shut out the Crusaders 6-0, and Jess Peacock (2-4, 2 R, 2B), Hayley Gately (2-4, 3 RBI) had 2 hits apiece.

In the evening game, MNU faced #8-ranked and 1-seed Central Methodist. Taylor Pearcy struck out the side in the first, but ran into trouble in the next 2 innings. CMU got 3 runs on 4 hits in the second, and 2 runs on 3 hits in the third to take a 5-0 lead. MNU threatened in the sixth and seventh but could not break through, and the season came to a close. Madison McKay (2-3, 2B) had 2 hits for the Pioneers.

MNU ends the season 26-25.
