Pioneers Sweep on Senior Day

MNU trailed in both games, but came back in each to sweep Culver-Stockton on Senior Day. In Game 1, MNU took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Hayley Gately sacrifice fly, but Culver tied in the third. In the top of the fifth, the Wildcats rallied for 5 runs on 3 hits, a walk, a hit batsman, and 2 wild pitches to take a 6-1 lead. But the Pioneers responded in the bottom of the inning. Ana Tavarez was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and Jessica Scarlett singled. One out later, Alexis Pacheco was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Kaity Wills walked with 2 outs to bring home a run. Hayley Gately followed with her biggest hit of the year: a grand slam off the scoreboard to tie the game at 6. Madison McKay followed with a single and Macie Jones' bloop double gave MNU a 1-run lead. Megan Schwindler pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh, and the Pioneers held on for the 7-6 victory. Schwindler earned the win in relief, and Alexis Pacheco (3-3, 2 R, 2B, HBP, SB) and Hayley Gately (1-2, R, GS, 5 RBI, SF) led the offense.

In Game 2, both teams scored a run in the first, and Culver took a 2-1 lead with a run in the third. In the bottom of the third, Lorena Martinez led off with a single, and Jess Peacock was hit by a pitch 1 out later. Kaity Wills followed with a 2-run triple, then alertly stole home after the play was over and home plate was left uncovered. With 2 outs, Madison McKay doubled and scored on a Macie Jones single to give MNU a 5-1 lead. In the top of the fifth, Culver mounted a comeback. Back-to-back walks to the 8 and 9 hitters started the inning, and 2 singles and a walk knocked starter Taylor Pearcy from the game clinging to a 5-4 lead with the bases loaded and no outs. The next batter hit a grounder to Jess Peacock at second, who tagged the runner from first then fired to the plate for a double play. Peacock ended the inning with a nice sliding grab of a short pop up, and the Pioneers escaped with the lead. MNU rallied for 3 runs on 4 hits in the fifth, then put the game away with 3 more in the sixth. Megan Schwindler earned the save in the 11-4 victory, Taylor Pearcy picked up her 15th win of the season, and Jess Peacock (2-3, 2 R, SB, HBP), Kaity Wills (1-4, 2 R, 3B, 2 RBI, SB), Hayley Gately (2-3, 2 R, RBI, BB), Madison McKay (3-4, 3 R, 2B, 2 RBI), Macie Jones (2-4, 2 RBI), and Ana Tavarez (2-4, 2 RBI) had big games at the plate.

MNU finishes the regular season over .500 for the first time since the first game of the year at 24-23 (12-6 HAAC). The next game will be in the first round of the 8-team double elimination conference tournament starting next Thursday, April 30 at the Blue Valley Recreation Complex.
