The Pioneers concluded their trip to Oklahoma City with a 5-4 victory over Mount Mercy and a 3-2 loss to #7 Tabor on Saturday. In the first game, starting pitcher and DH
Carlos Vargas drove in 2 in the bottom of the first with a bases loaded single. The Pioneers went up 3-0 in the second, but Mount Mercy scored 1 in the third to cut into the lead.
Kelvin Perez driller a solo homer in the fourth, and
Jordan Jones brought home another in the sixth to give MNU a 5-1 lead. In the top of the seventh, Mount Mercy mounted a rally. Two runs scored and they had runners on second and third with no outs. But a lineout, an RBI groundout, and a pop out ended the threat and gave MNU the 1-run victory. Vargas earned the win.
Phillipe Graham recorded the save. And Vargas (1-3, 2 RBI),
Santiago Romero (2-3), and
Kelvin Perez (1-1, R, HR, RBI, BB) led the offense.
Against undefeated #7 Tabor, each team scored in the first inning, but no one scored again until the fifth. The Blue Jays rallied for 2 runs and carried a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. With 1 out,
Jordan Jones doubled and
Seth Lieser singled to put the tying runs on base. With 2 outs
Nelson Santiago's RBI single got MNU within 1 and sent the tying run to 3rd. A groundout ended the threat and kept Tabor undefeated at 11-0.
Brett Ebers struck out 4 in 4.1 innings in the loss. And
Clayton Brandt (1-2, R, 2B) and
Seth Lieser (3-3, 2B) led the offense.
MNU is 4-4. The next game is a 4-game series at home vs. York (6-5) with double headers on Friday and Saturday starting at noon.
